A family from Hamilton mountain are the city’s latest victims of a stolen car, however, they’re more concerned with the cargo inside, a wheelchair for their daughter.

Mike Shea’s stepdaughter, 31-year-old Sarah, lives with physical and developmental disabilities. Sarah’s wheelchair is custom-made and cost the family nearly $2,000.

On Monday, Mike started his wife Cindy’s car so it could heat up, he crossed the street to drop Christmas cards at the community mailbox, and when he turned around Mike noticed something strange. Someone was inside his car, when Mike went to open the car door it was already locked. Mike says “then the big black SUV came behind our car that they stalled and raced down the street…”

Security footage from a neighbouring home shows a black SUV drive off and the stolen car speed away. The stolen car is a white 2013 Volkswagon Jetta with the licence plate BRZK 406.

The car is the least of Mike and Cindy’s worries, their daughter Sarah needs the wheelchair to move.

The parents say they’ll have to physically carry Sarah around throughout the holidays until they find a replacement.

CHCH News has yet to hear back from police on this story, the family says the theft has been reported and officers were on scene today looking into what happened.

A GoFundMe page has been created, with the goal of raising $2,000 to help the family replace the wheelchair.
